FM nominated as Bangladesh candidate for UNGA presidency

Bangladesh has nominated Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman as its candidate for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), a diplomatic source said on Thursday.

The nomination comes after Palestine withdrew its candidature for the post, clearing the way for a contest between Bangladesh and Cyprus.

Bangladesh had floated its candidature ahead of Palestine.

The election for the President of the General Assembly (PGA) will be held in June at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The presidency for the 2026–27 term has been allocated to the Asia-Pacific regional group.

Bangladesh previously held the position when the then foreign minister, the late Humayun Rasheed Chowdhury, served as president of the 41st session of the UNGA in 1986–87.
